Also known as el-Bahrein, it is located 96 km west of Alexandria, 40 km west of ancient Taposiris Magna (Abu Sir), and 185 km east of Paraetonium (Marsa Matruh). For the past twenty years, Polish and Egyptian missions have been conducting archaeological research and preservation of the remains of the Hellenistic-Roman town and necropolis found on this spot and tentatively identified on the basis of descriptions of ancient destruction on the Mediterranean coast. The excavations occupy a section of the lagoon coast more than 1000 m long E-W and about 550 m wide N-S. The layout of the ancient town has been reconstructed on the basis of results of investigations conducted to date. The harbour infrastructure, including warehouses of which ruins have survived, lay immediately on the coast. Directly to the south of the port and commercial quarter, was the city centre which included baths, a civic basilica and other public buildings around a porticoed main square. Surrounding the centre were densely occupied habitation quarters. Remains of more than 50 different architectural structures have been discovered in the town and necropolis. On the basis of archaeological evidence, the town functioned from the 2nd century BC to the beginning of the 7th century AD. The earliest remains, some even from the mid 2nd century BC, were found in the necropolis. A very specific type of architectural decoration characterized by simplification and decorative geometrization appears in Marina where it also seems to have been prevalent. This kind of stylization has been associated mainly with Petra where a similar architectural decoration was commonly applied. Having been recognized first in Petra, it came to be known as Nabatean. C'était la Table Odysséaque de la collection Rondanini qui depuis cent ans passait pour perdue.\u003cbr\u003eLorsque j'étais en train de préparer la publication il fût évident que toute la catégorie de monuments dont ce relief faisait partie a été négligée, sinon oubliée, depuis de longues années. Et pourtant elle présente une valeur indéniable au point de vue esthétique et documentaire, puisqu'elle constitue un témoignage archéologique, fort important pour l'histoire de la société romaine au début de l'empire.\u003cbr\u003eL'étude de ces objets pourrait contribuer en outre à enrichir l'histoire de la sculpture gréco-romaine et jeter de la lumière sur l'influence réciproque de la littérature et de l'art. Les reliefs de cette catégorie constituent un excellent compendium de scènes empruntées aux poèmes épiques, compendium qui dépasse en richesse de détails beaucoup d'autres; ils témoignent de la tradition de l'épopée grecque à Rome au Ter siècle de n. è. Voilà les causes qui m'ont décidée d'entreprendre l'étude et la publication des monuments.\u003cbr\u003eDès le début je me suis heurtée à une difficulté bien sérieuse, notamment au manque de documentation — difficulté d'autant plus pénible que la dispersion des monuments rendait parfois toute autopsie impossible. 11 ne m'était pas non plus facile de me procurer la littérature concernant le sujet de mes études — c'était en grande partie des articles ou même de brèves mentions dans d'anciennes publications, depuis longtemps épuisées. Grand Tour of Stanislaw Kostka Potocki and its catalogue celebrate the 200th anniversary of the existence of a museum in the Wilanow Palace and  illustrate the very beginnings of this institution. The November vernissage commemorates also the  250th birth anniversary of the founder of our collection. \u003cbr\u003eThe exhibition illustrates, on the basis of existing source material, the programme of young Stanislaw Kostka Potocki's initial education, which was designed by his tutors, and later his independent studies, the shaping of his worldview and attainment of maturity as a collector, as a man f of many accomplishments, and as an erudite with wide knowledge of Northern-European and Antique art. In our studies, special attention was devoted to the research workshop of this archeologist and historian of art, who was one of the first in Poland to be fully aware of his research goals. Thus, examined were Potocki's methods of stylistic analysis, as well as methods according to which he selected individual features of given works of art and later recalled them to mind. His written material on these topics is still insufficiently researched; therefore this catalogue is exceptionally rich in quotations concerning his thoughts and reflections, coming from his own letters and notes, mainly those written during his many European, and especially Italian travels. These excerpts acquaint the reader with reasons for Potocki's journeys — first in order to complete his education, later for study and research, finally to bolster his failing health.
