Also known as el-Bahrein, it is located 96 km west of Alexandria, 40 km west of ancient Taposiris Magna (Abu Sir), and 185 km east of Paraetonium (Marsa Matruh). For the past twenty years, Polish and Egyptian missions have been conducting archaeological research and preservation of the remains of the Hellenistic-Roman town and necropolis found on this spot and tentatively identified on the basis of descriptions of ancient destruction on the Mediterranean coast. The excavations occupy a section of the lagoon coast more than 1000 m long E-W and about 550 m wide N-S. The layout of the ancient town has been reconstructed on the basis of results of investigations conducted to date. The harbour infrastructure, including warehouses of which ruins have survived, lay immediately on the coast. Directly to the south of the port and commercial quarter, was the city centre which included baths, a civic basilica and other public buildings around a porticoed main square. Surrounding the centre were densely occupied habitation quarters. Remains of more than 50 different architectural structures have been discovered in the town and necropolis. On the basis of archaeological evidence, the town functioned from the 2nd century BC to the beginning of the 7th century AD. The earliest remains, some even from the mid 2nd century BC, were found in the necropolis. A very specific type of architectural decoration characterized by simplification and decorative geometrization appears in Marina where it also seems to have been prevalent. This kind of stylization has been associated mainly with Petra where a similar architectural decoration was commonly applied. Having been recognized first in Petra, it came to be known as Nabatean. It covers archaeological finds from seasons 1990-2006 (with a few objects from earlier explorations not published in the previous two publications, for the years respectively 1956-1973 and 1975-1989) uncovered during the dig at the Villa of Theseus and the neighboring urban insulas in the southeastern part of the ancient city. Altogether in this volume there are 191 stamps. Most of these (155) come from Rhodos and represent both official eponymic and fabricant stamps from the period between the 3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD. The remaining stamps originated from other centers of the Greek-speaking world where amphorae used for packaging other goods were produced, primarily from Knidos and Kos, but also isolated examples from Chios and Pamphylia. The author discusses the stamps in alphabetical order of the names of the persons to whom they belonged, citing exhaustively parallel stamps in an effort to establish dating and to determine the official relations between particular eponyms and producers of amphorae. A few Graeco-Italic stamps are presented at the end of the catalogue, as well as some Latin stamps on Roman mortaria.\u003cbr\u003eThe excavations in the years covered by the present publication were increasingly focused on stratigraphic layers dated to periods preceding the rule of Rome on the island (including a few sealed ceramic deposits from cisterns, for example), hence the stamps published in this volume are to a much larger extent from synchronic contexts. Without a special agreement the work was shared out between other institutions, especially the Institute of Archaeology at Warsaw University (from 1993) and, as the necessity arose, by employees of the Institute of History at the University of Wroclaw, the Insitutc of Geological Sciences at Polish Aca­demy of Sciences, and the Arbeitsgruppe Archiio-mctrie der Freien Universitat, Berlin.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe aim of the Project was to study the history and structure of a Greek colony, Nymphaion2 in its totality. This embraced the investigation -of both the town and its rural hinterland (chora), as well as various aspects of the life of its inhabitants in Antiquity, i.a., economy, culture, and social and ethnic relations. For this end various categories of source material were used: archaeological, iconographic, literary, epigraphic, and palaeozoological ones, as well as various methods: field survey, excavation, geophysical and underwater survey, cartography, and analysis of satellite pictures. It was intended to carry out parallelly various forms of research work, i.a., field work, studies of source materials, studies of selected historical problems, prep­aration of publications, and working conferences (of the round table type).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt seems appropriate to explain why Nym­phaion, a relatively small, but important colony located to the south of Kerc (ancient Pantikapaion), on the western shore of the Kerc Strait (Bosphorus Cimmericus), was selected as a subject of the investigation. Nymphaion became the focus of our interest because it provided optimum conditions for the accomplishment of the aims of the Project. Firstly, it was a relatively small colony (in compar­ison to, e.g., Pantikapaion or Olbia), and thus it was easier to study the problems involved in their totality. Secondly, the neighbourhood of the Ancient town is not covered with buildings and this made it possible to study the chora. Finally, and perhaps most importantly for our part, the excavations conducted in the area of the town since 1939 by the Hermitage Museum have yielded impressive results, which offered further interesting research prospects. So far a large section of fortifications, numerous sanctuaries, residential buildings, and other structures have been uncovered.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDuring the 5 year long research, the ambitious (as we had realised from the very beginning) plans were carried out to a different extent: some topics have been thoroughly examined, other ones shall soon be pre­sented in publications, some have been abandoned.
