Eddy, Fred Wendorf, An Archaeological Investigation of the Central Sinai, Egypt, University Press of Colorado 1999

Based on field work conducted in 1996 by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition (CPE)in the upper Wadi Grafi Basin, An Archaeological Investigation of the Central Sinai, Egypt, sheds further light on the Timnian Tradition of the southern Levant, one of the earliest (7000-3000 B.P.) nomadic pastoral cultures described to date. The results of their research indicate that there were two distinct settlement patterns that were alternating adaptive responses to changing climatic conditions. First, a regional environmental analysis shows that nomadic tent pastoralists herding goats, sheep, as well as cattle were responding to desert living during and times. The settlement data reveal this adaptation in two periods, once during the Chalcolithic (Copper Age) (6500-4800 B.P.) and again during the Middle Bronze Age (3800-3300 B.P.). By contrast, the second pattern -- that of semi-nomadic village pastoralists -- was a solution to life in the wetter climate that appeared during the Early Bronze Age (4800-3800 B.P.). Thus, the authors maintain, the Chalcolithic/Bronze Age archaeology shows a pattern in which the fully nomadic tent community alternated with seminomadic village pastoralists according to the intensity of rainfall and availability of forage. An Archaeological Investigation of the Central Sinai, Egypt, is divided into two parts, one describing the results of the survey and the other detailing the later excavations in the fall. Complete with 101 line drawings, 60 maps, and 23 black-and-white photos, this book is essential reading for scholars interested in the pre-historic archaeology of the Sinai region.

List of Figures
List of Tables
Foreward
Preface and Acknowledgments
Abstract
SURVEY
1.0 Introduction
2.0 Research Methods
3.0 Description of Site Localities
4.0 Dating and Chronology Building
5.0 Analysis of Data
6.0 Interpretive Summary
7.0 References Cited
EXCAVATION
8.0 Introduction
9.0 Excavations at Sinai-1, the Rahaya Site, Rahaya Locality
10.0 Excavations at Sinai-10, the Kite Site, Romythi Locality
11.0 Excavations at Sinai-18, the Khasem El Taref Site, Zarnoq Locality
12.0 Excavations at Sinai-20, the Split Rock Site, Zarnoq Locality
13.0 Test Excavations at Three Sites, S-25, S-27, S-40, Tabieq Locality
14.0 Excavations at Sinai-32, the Megrah Site, Tabieq Locality
15.0 Excavations at Sinai-47, the Power Line Site, Zarnoq Locality
16.0 Excavations at Sinai-73, the Mazeyh Site, Zarnoq Locality
17.0 Radiocarbon Dates
18.0 Interpretive Summary
19.0 References Cited
Appendices
A A Description of Surface-Collected Vessel Fragments
B Geomorphology and Slope Reversal in Southeastern Sinai
C Glossary of Place Names and Terms
D Geomorphology, Stratigraphy and Lithology of Prehistoric Sites
E Archaeobotanical Report
F Charcoal identifications from Sinai-1 and Sinai-32
G Excavations at Sinai-74, Zarnoq Locality

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0222/6404/products/An-Archaeological-Investigation-of-the-Central-Sinai-Egypt-Eddy-Wendorf.jpg?v=1788107738
system-of-analytical-archaeography
System of Analytical Archaeography

Description: softcover, 141 pages (24x17), figs., tables
Condition: very good
Weight: 300g.

Jaroslaw Malina, System of Analytical Archaeography, Academia Praha 1977

C.H. It would be presumptuous to propose that it contains papers touching more than a few aspects of this complex question, nevertheless some of the Polish contributions present material and concepts and discuss literature which may be less well-known in the English-speaking world and worthy of further discussion. Polish consider?ations of the concept of archaeological cultures owe much to the approaches of the German schools of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but in addition, after the Second World War the approach to archaeological cultures was for several decades concerned with questions of ethnogenesis (particularly of the Slavs) and the ethnic qualification of archaeological sources. Attempts to break out of the sometimes circular arguments which this created produced results which were in many ways innovative.

On reading through these various papers, one is struck by the emphasis which appears in several of them on questions of ethnicity (see "Archaeologia Polona" volume 29), it seems that - despite the intentions of the editors - we still find it very difficult to break free of certain mental stereotypes. Another interesting feature is the frequency of the use in the discussions presented here of examples drawn from the Neolithic period. To survive in such a region people should be able to structurally attain more water than rainfall alone can supply. The archaeology of this area should not only identify when people inhabited such a region and what the character of this habitation was, but also how people were able to survive in such a region and why they chose to live there in the first place.

In this book these questions have been studied for the Zerqa Triangle; a region in the middle Jordan Valley around Tell Deir ‘Alla (Jordan). By means of a detailed pedestrian archaeological survey the intensity of habitation of the region from the Neolithic to early modern periods is investigated. Efforts have been undertaken to reconstruct the agricultural practices in the various periods and simultaneously the means by which the different communities were able to practice agriculture; in other words, how did they irrigate the land? By focussing on the different social responses of communities conclusions have been drawn on how and why people managed to create a living in this arid, but potentially very fertile region.

This book not only contributes to the ongoing discussion of the archaeology of marginal areas, but also provides a huge amount of new data on the archaeology of the Jordan Valley, both in the form of newly discovered settlement sites from several different periods as well as remains from several more inconspicuous types of human activity present in the countryside.
ISBN: 9789088902512
Description: 284 pages (18x25,5cm), softcover, 118 ills.
Condition: new
Weight: 795g.

Experiments Past, Histories of Experimental Archaeology, edited by Jodi Reeves Flores, Roeland Paardekooper, Sidestone Press 2014

With Experiments Past the important role that experimental archaeology has played in the development of archaeology is finally uncovered and understood. Experimental archaeology is a method to attempt to replicate archaeological artefacts and/or processes to test certain hypotheses or discover information about those artefacts and/or processes. It has been a key part of archaeology for well over a century, but such experiments are often embedded in wider research, conducted in isolation or never published or reported. Experiments Past provides readers with a glimpse of experimental work and experience that was previously inaccessible due to language, geographic and documentation barriers, while establishing a historical context for the issues confronting experimental archaeology today. This volume contains formal papers on the history of experimental methodologies in archaeology, as well as personal experiences of the development of experimental archaeology from early leaders in the field, such as Hans-Ole Hansen. Also represented in these chapters are the histories of experimental approaches to taphonomy, the archaeology of boats, building structures and agricultural practices, as well as narratives on how experimental archaeology has developed on a national level in several European countries and its role in encouraging a wide-scale interest and engagement with the past.

Introduction
Roeland Paardekooper & Jodi Reeves Flores
The History of Experimental Archaeology in Croatia
Andrea Jerkušic
History of Experimental Archaeology in Latvia
Arturs Tomsons
Experimental Archaeology in Ireland: Its Past and Potential for the Future
Tríona Sørensen & Aidan O’Sullivan
Experimental Archaeology in France: a History of the Discipline
Guillaume Reich & Damien Linder
Experimental Archaeology in Spain
Javier Baena et al.
The Developmental Steps Of Experimental Archaeology In Greece Through Key Historical Replicative Experiments And Reconstructions
Spyros Bakas & Nikolaos Kleisiaris
The Role of Experimental Archaeology in (West) German Universities from 1946 Onwards – Initial Remarks
Martin Schmidt
Ruminating on the Past: A History of Digestive Taphonomy in Experimental Archaeology
Don O’Meara
The History and Development of Archaeological Open-Air Museums in Europe
Roeland Paardekooper
Experience and Experiment
Hans-Ole Hansen
Experimental Archaeology in Denmark 1960-1980 – As Seen Through the Letters of Robert Thomsen
Henriette Lyngstrøm
The Origins of Experimental Archaeology in Catalonia: The Experimental Area of L’Esquerda
Imma Ollich-Castanyer et al.
Building, Burning, Digging and Imagining: Trying to Approach the Prehistoric Dwelling (Experiments Conducted by the National University of Arts in Romania)
Dragos Gheorgiu
From Ship-Find to Sea-Going Reconstruction: Experimental Maritime Archaeology at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde
Morten Ravn et al.
Experimental iron smelting in the research on reconstruction of the bloomery process in the Swietokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mountains. In spite of their ubiquity, little is known on the role they had in pre- and protohistoric landscapes. In 2010, an international group of archaeologists came together at the conference of the European Association of Archaeologists in The Hague to discuss and review current research on this topic. This book presents the proceedings of that session. The focus is on the prehistory of Scandinavia and the Low Countries, but also includes an excursion to huge prehistoric mounds in the southeast of North America. One contribution presents new evidence on how the immediate environment of Neolithic Funnel Beaker (TRB) culture megaliths was ordered, another one discusses the role of remarkable single and double post alignments around Bronze and Iron Age burial mounds. Zooming out, several chapters deal with the place of barrows in the broader landscape. The significance of humanly-managed heath in relation to barrow groups is discussed, and one contribution emphasizes how barrow orderings not only reflect spatial organization, but are also important as conceptual anchors structuring prehistoric perception. Other authors, dealing with Early Neolithic persistent places and with Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age urnfields, argue that we should also look beyond monumentality in order to understand long-term use of “ritual landscapes”. The book contains an important contribution by the well-known Swedish archaeologist Tore Artelius on how Bronze Age barrows were structurally re-used by pre-Christian Vikings. This is his last article, written briefly before his death. This book is dedicated to his memory.

Beyond Barrows – an introduction
By David Fontijn
Inventions of Memory and Meaning – Examples of Late Iron Age Reuse of Bronze Age Monuments in South-Western Sweden
By Tore Artelius†
Part I (Beyond monumentality)
Memorious Monuments. The Greek demand for the return of the Elgin Marbles is the tip of an iceberg that includes claims for the Benin Bronzes from Nigeria, sculpture from Turkey, scrolls and porcelain taken from the Chinese Summer Palace, textiles from Peru, the bust of Nefertiti, Native American sacred objects, and Aboriginal human remains.

In Keeping Their Marbles, Tiffany Jenkins tells the bloody story of how western museums came to acquire these objects. She investigates why repatriation claims have soared in recent decades and demonstrates how it is the guilt and insecurity of the museums themselves that have stoked the demands for return. Contrary to the arguments of campaigners, she shows that sending artefacts back will not achieve the desired social change nor repair the wounds of history.

Instead, this ground-breaking book makes the case for museums as centres of knowledge, demonstrating that no object has a single home, and no one culture owns culture.

ISBN: 9789088907326
Description: 245 pp. (30x21cm), softcover, ills.
Condition: new
Weight: 855g.

André J. All published material is depicted and some previously unpublished material is added here.

The work on physical examples of footwear has brought to light exciting new insights into ancient Egyptian technology and craftsmanship (including its development but also in the relationships of various footwear categories and their origin), establishing and refining the dating of technologies and styles of footwear, the diversity of footwear, provided a means of identification of provenance for unprovenanced examples, and the relationship between footwear and socio-economic status. The archaeometrical research has lead to the reinterpretation of ancient Egyptian words for various vegetal materials, such as papyrus.

Preface
Introduction
Short History of Footwear in Egyptology
Research Objectives
Layout of the Present Work
Terminology
Materials and Methods
Studied Objects
Methods
Hands-On Study
Vegetal Materials (Other than Wood)
Skin and Leather
Wood
Metal
Archaeological Context: A Problematic Inheritance
Museological Context: Problems and Priorities
Description
Footwear Made of Vegetal Material (Other than Wood)
Sandals
Shoes
Footwear Made of Leather
Sandals
Shoes
Mules
Footwear Made of Wood
Tomb Sandals
Pattens
Typology
Materials Used in Footwear
Vegetal Materials (Other than Wood)
The Samples
Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Berlin
The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, University College London
The British Museum, London
Discussion
Skin and Leather
Wood
Metal
Diachronic Change
Introduction
Technology
Shape
Distribution
Production
Tanneries, Workshops and Craftsmen
Tools
Use, Wear and Repair
Signs of Use
Wear
Evidence of Repair
Utility Footwear vs. Footwear for the Afterlife
Royal vs. Commoners
Gender in Footwear
Symbolism and Status
Foreign Footwear and Influences in Egypt
Conclusions
Bibliography
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0222/6404/products/The-Ancient-Egyptian-Footwear-Project.jpg?v=1788110822
