It covers archaeological finds from seasons 1990-2006 (with a few objects from earlier explorations not published in the previous two publications, for the years respectively 1956-1973 and 1975-1989) uncovered during the dig at the Villa of Theseus and the neighboring urban insulas in the southeastern part of the ancient city. Altogether in this volume there are 191 stamps. Most of these (155) come from Rhodos and represent both official eponymic and fabricant stamps from the period between the 3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD. The remaining stamps originated from other centers of the Greek-speaking world where amphorae used for packaging other goods were produced, primarily from Knidos and Kos, but also isolated examples from Chios and Pamphylia. The author discusses the stamps in alphabetical order of the names of the persons to whom they belonged, citing exhaustively parallel stamps in an effort to establish dating and to determine the official relations between particular eponyms and producers of amphorae. A few Graeco-Italic stamps are presented at the end of the catalogue, as well as some Latin stamps on Roman mortaria.\u003cbr\u003eThe excavations in the years covered by the present publication were increasingly focused on stratigraphic layers dated to periods preceding the rule of Rome on the island (including a few sealed ceramic deposits from cisterns, for example), hence the stamps published in this volume are to a much larger extent from synchronic contexts. One of the most spectacular was the so-called Villa of Theseus, a Roman palace, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, probably an official residence of the Roman governors of Cyprus. It comprised a series of figural mosaics, marble sculptures and a quantity of small finds. The so-called House of Aion, another Roman edifice unearthed in 1983\/84 has yielded a truly unique set of figural mosaics with mythological themes. All these finds testify to the importance of Nea Paphos the \"sacred metropolis of all the cities of the island\". Investigations carried out under the Roman buildings have produced rich finds relating to earlier periods. Fragments of Hellenistic streets, drains, houses, workshops, hundreds of artifacts of all kinds allow to draw a picture of the development of the town from the end of the 4th cent. These works were purchased by the newly established Museum in the mid-1870s from General Luigi Palma di Cesnola, a Civil War cavalry officer who had amassed the objects while serving as the American consul on Cyprus. The Cesnola Collection was the earliest acquisition of Mediterranean antiquities by the Museum and constituted its primary display of archaeological material. In 1879 Cesnola became the Museum's first director, a position that he held until his death in 1904.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis splendid catalogue is published on the occasion of the opening of the Museum's four permanent galleries for ancient art from Cyprus. It is also the first scholarly publication since 1914 devoted to the Cesnola Collection (which totals approximately six thousand objects). The volume features some five hundred pieces from the collection, illustrated in superb new color photography. Dating from about 2500 B.C. to about A.D. 300, these works rank among the finest examples of Cypriot art from the prehistoric, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. Among the objects are monumental sculpture; weapons, tools, and domestic utensils; vases, lamps, and ritual paraphernalia; dedicatory figurines; engraved sealstones and jewelry; and luxury objects. They represent every major medium worked in antiquity—stone, copper-based metal, clay, faience, glass, gold and silver, ivory, and semiprecious stones. These pieces testify to the quintessentially Cypriot amalgam of indigenous traditions and elements assimilated from the ancient Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, and Romans who, one after the other, controlled the island. From this viewpoint, cultural change under imperial rule was understood as a natural process of the conquered passively accepting the empire’s superior culture. When imperial culture was in some respect not fully accepted by the local community, this was often interpreted as an act of resistance. In recent years, however, methodical and epistemological development in classical archaeology has called into question the existing interpretations of cultural changes during the Hellenistic and the Roman period. New perspectives in humanities discourse, the postcolonial theory in particular, have caused scholars to re-evaluate traditional assumptions. The emphasis falls on the complexity of cross-cultural interaction between the colonizing and colonized groups. Epistemological changes have also occurred in Cypriot archaeology. Detailed GIS analysis of old archaeological data as well as new excavation works including those in Amathous, Idalion, Nea Paphos and in the rural sites such as Athienou-Malloura, Panayia Ematousa have led to new interpretations of how Cypriot culture changed under Roman rule. Instead of a one-way Romanization process, both local Cypriot and foreign archaeologist have begun to perceive the impact of the Roman culture as a developing, pluralistic dialogue of different trends reflecting the island’s multicultural past. The cult of heroes in Roman Cyprus project financed by the Polish National Science Center awarded on the basis of decision number DEC-2012\/07 \/N \/HS3 \/00858 has made a small contribution to the broader vivid academic discourse on Roman Cyprus. The research focused on the religious landscape in general and the worship of heroes in particular. The worship of heroes is one of the most fascinating aspects of the Greek religion. Heroes were the essence of the society from which they came. According to G. Heedren (1991), the main difference between the worship of heroes and Olympic gods lies in the geographical limits of the cult. While a hero-cult was most often restricted to a particular locality, the worship of the Olympian gods was usually widespread.
