Squeezes of some inscriptions from Novae

Palaeography is a study of the history of handwriting, its peculiarities and development throughout centuries. By definition then it does not deal with print, nor has it been interested, at least for a long time, in inscriptions engraved in solid materials, stone included. Classic handbooks in palaeography devote only little attention to such inscriptions, and view them exclusively in the perspective of the history of writing, rarely consulting the documents from the period. Palaeographers left the whole area of the study of inscriptions to epigraphy. A change of the attitude occurred with the works of J. Mallon and R. Marichal, who insisted that inscriptions should become the object of palaeography. Cutting inscriptions in stone is, according to J. Mallon, an ending of a process pertinent to the discipline. The fact that inscriptions are made with the help of a chisel and hammer should not diminish their meaning for palaeography.
To an epigrapher, Novae on the Danube in Lower Moesia is in some measure an ideal object. There are as many as two corpora of inscriptions available, the first of which includes Latin inscriptions found during excavations that took place from 1960 till 1989. The second contains all inscriptions from Novae until the first half of 1996, Greek and Latin, both those known already before the excavations and those discovered in the excavations. All in all, we have 230 Latin inscriptions to our disposal. Although from the perspective of the five-hundred-year history of Novae the amount is moderate, it can serve as a departure point for reflections on the history of the legionary fortress and the town, soldiers and civilians.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0222/6404/products/Palaeography-of-Latin-Inscriptions-from-Novae.jpg?v=1381471416
egyptian-artefacts-of-the-museum-of-fine-arts-budapest
Egyptian Artefacts of the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest

ISBN: 978-615-5304-21-7
Description: softcover, 187 pp. (30x23cm), phots.
Condition: new
Weight: 1020g.

Egyptian Artefacts of the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest, Edited by Katalin Anna Kóthay, Éva Liptay, Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest 2013

Rare publication.

Entries by: Péter József Gaboda, Zoltán Horváth, Katalin Anna Kóthay, Éva Liptay, István Nagy, Máté Petrik, Edith Varga

The catalogue first appeared in English in 2010. The present study centers upon the place of the olive in the agricultural regimes and economies of Roman and Byzantine Syria–Palestine, exploring them in environmental, technological, social and, when possible, economic contexts.

The author explores the regional origins of olive cultivation and its wanderings across time and space, discussing typology and chronology of oil facilities and their rural and urban contexts, as well as the economics of production and logistics of olive oil distribution.

The book opens with a synthetic presentation of oil production in Roman and Byzantine Syria–Palestine, based for the most part on data, which is gathered and presented in the second part as well as in an online resource, comprising new evidence from Syria, Lebanon and Jordan, as well as an overview of previously available data from Palestine, supplemented with information on the latest discoveries. Prominent among the data from Lebanon are hitherto unpublished records from PCMA excavations in Chhîm and Jiyeh, directed by Tomasz Waliszewski. It presents the material record of Nubian monasticism and offers a comparative analysis of this phenomenon. On the basis of archaeological and epigraphic data, the author reconstructs the life in Nubian monasteries. The work features a catalogue of archaeological sites tentatively identified as locations of monastic communities, as well as an overview of pertinent textual sources. Among the focal points are spatial aspects of the Nubian monastic movement, particularly the location of Nubian monasteries and their spatial organisation. Spatial analysis of monastic sites serves as a point of departure for insights into the social and economic matters of monastic communities in Nubia, which are central to the third part of the book. From the scarce sources the author recreates the complex spiritual and social dynamics present in monasteries, their management systems and competing hierarchies.

ISBN: 978-83-94288-7-3
Description: softcover, 38 pp. (21x21cm)
Condition: new             Weight: 150g.

Franciszek Pawlicki, The Main Sanctuary of Amun-Re in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari , PCMA University of Warsaw, Warsaw 2017
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0222/6404/products/The-Main-Sanctuary-of-Amun-Re-in-the-Temple-of-Hatshepsut-at-Deir-el-Bahari.jpg?v=1581014619
ukrainian-painting-between-the-byzantine-and-latin-traditions
Ukrainian Painting Between the Byzantine and Latin Traditions

Waldemar Deluga, Ukrainian Painting Between the Byzantine and Latin Traditions, Ostrava-Warsaw 2019

Introduction
I. The authors focused on the role that selected commanders played in the empire’s military struggles with hostile peoples and states. Researchers are also interested in their role in the political life of the empire. Presenting profiles representative of the military elite of the empire from the years 474–518 gave the authors the opportunity to trace their path to the highest military positions, family connections, and involvement in religious and cultural life.

The book is divided into five basic parts. The first part addresses the topic of organization and the problem of the size of the army of the late Roman Empire and early Byzantium. The second one discusses the policy of emperors Zeno and Anastasius I regarding the appointment of magisters militum. The third one describes the most important opponents of the Byzantine Empire, with whom the leaders appointed by Zeno and Anastasius had to fight, namely the Ostrogoths, Persians and Bulgars. The fourth part shows the involvement of representatives of the military elite in usurpations and rebellions in the times of Zeno and Anastasius I. Finally, the fifth part includes ten exemplary biographies of militum magisters active in the times of Zeno and Anastasius I (Areobindus, Armatus, Hypatius, Illus, John the Scythian, Leontius, Patricius, Pharesmanes, Sabinianus Magnus, Trocundes). Texts published in this volume are organized, as far as the sources permitted, according to the following scheme: descent, education, career (civil and military), picture in the sources, family, and military duties.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0222/6404/files/Strategoi-early-Byzantine-Military-Commanders-in-the-Times-of-Zeno-and-Anastasius-I-474-518.jpg?v=1737362334
chrysomallos-polish-archaeologists-in-the-black-sea-region
Chrysomallos, Polish Archaeologists in the Black Sea Region

ISBN: 978-83-66210-35-6
Description: hardback, 237 pp. (30,5x21,5cm), figs.
Condition: new
Weight: 1120g.

Chrysomallos, Polish Archaeologists in the Black Sea Region, M. The scope of the source material stretches, thus, from the astronomical work of Manilius (1st century AD) all the way to the poems of Venantius Fortunatus (c. 530 – c. 600), covering almost six centuries of the development of Latin literature. My aim is to investigate which motifs were referred to by Roman poets, which patterns can be noticed in those texts, which elements were mentioned most often, what relations can be observed between these references and the historical, geographical, social or religious realities, and finally, what function these references serve within the scope of entire poems or parts of texts extracted from longer works. I am also interested in the “genealogy” of these motifs: their origin and how they were employed by the poets of subsequent periods. I aim at examining the degree of consistency of the overall image created from references scattered throughout the works of various authors and its changes in the course of time.

Introduction
Chapter 1.
