A separate article has been devoted to them by Stanislaw Wojtowicz: "Skarb denarow rzymskich z Wroclawia na tie skarbow sl^skich II i HI w." (The hoard of Roman denarii in Wroclaw as compared with the Silesian hoards of the 2nd and 3rd centuries) (Ze skarbca kultury, 1967 no. 18). In 1889, the publication was replaced by the "Wiadomosci Numizmatyczno-Archeologiczne" (Numismatic-Archeological Neivs) issued by tlie Cracow Numismatic Society. The journal's last volume spanning the years 1940-1948 came out in 1949. Since then, the numismatic community in Cracow has stopped publishing its own scholarly numismatic periodical. The "Wiadomosci Numizmatyczno-Archeologiczne" is now continued by the internationally renowned "Wiadomosci Numizmatyczne" (Numismatic News) appearing since 1957 in Warsaw. Yet, the absence for almost half a century of a scholarly numismatic journal in Cracow has distressed our community, and the recurring thought has been that of reviving one.
In an attempt to satisfy these expectations and keep up the commendable numismatic traditions of our city, we begin publishing a new series titled "Notae Numismaticae -Zapiski Numizmatyczne". It is brought to you by the National Museum in Cracow in cooperation with the Numismatic Section of the Archeological Committee of the Polish Academy of Science (Cracow Chapter) and the Jagiellonian University. We welcome contributions from colleagues in other centers.
We rely on the presence in our journal of papers by an ever greater number of numismatists, but also archeologists, historians, art historians, philologists, and representatives of other related fields sharing an interest in the history of coins. We look forward not only to strictly numismatic information, but also to reflection and discussion on coins as a historical source and a testimony to language and culture.
Contributions addressed to a wider audience are going to be published in foreign languages, others will appear in Polish. Each will feature a summary in Polish or a foreign language respectively.
We dedicate the first issue of "Notae Numismaticae-Zapiski Niimizmatyczne" to the outstanding numismatist and collector Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, who settled in Cracow in 1894. He went to live in a little palace in Wolska Street (now 12 Pilsudskiego St.) where he also housed his ample collection. In 7972, his family honored the late Emeryk's will and donated the palace complete with the imposing collection to the city of Cracow. The coins, medals, and banknotes of Czapski's collection are kept in the same building to this day and constitute the foundation of the National Museum's Numismatic Cabinet.
As we commence our journal sub bonis auspiciis of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, we believe that the volume dedicated to him will prove worthy of the Cracow numismatic tradition.

ISBN: 83-04-01307-X
Description: softcover, 108 pp. (23,5x17 cm); figs; 750 vols. issued
Condition: very good- (small shelf damages of the cover)
Weight: 200g.

Leslaw Morawiecki, Political Propaganda in the Coinage of the Late Roman Republic (44-43 B.C.), Ossolineum 1983

CONTENTS
Introduction
Part I. The principles of that reign, called the golden age or the age of the Antonines. arc best characterized by the personification of Aequitas, Felicitas, and Fides that were often placed on the issues of silver and bronze coins.

The intense political and economic expansion in the 2nd century brought with it ihe widening of Rome's borders and influences northwards and to the territories beyond the Danube, reaching as far as the present Slovakia. The contacts with the peoples inhabiting those areas resulted in an influx of Roman currency beyond the limes of the Roman Empire, including the territory of the old and contemporary Poland. This process is reflected by numerous hoards and lesser finds that constitute the major source of 2nd century coins, especially those minted during the reign of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. That explains why in many Polish collections the coins among which there is a preponderance of silver denarii-date from the times of those emperors and constitute the most numerous group.

The structure of the Ossolineum collection is a typical illustration of this phenomenon -the coins registered in the present volume, 558 in all. from the biggest group in the collection of Roman coins.

An important characteristic of the mintage of that age, initiated by Vespasian, was the concentration in Rome of the issues of denarii, a currency of nationwide character, whose metallic value did not undergo significant fluctuations during the whole of the 2nd century. Of the provincial mints only that in Alexandria functioned, issuing numerous billon tetradrachms and bronzes indispensable for the economy of Roman Egypt. The monopoly of Rome's mint contributed to the achievement of a high standard of the technique of coinage, regular and numerous issues and long scries of types. The official, typical titula-turc stabilizes at that time making it possible to date the coins on the basis of offices held: consulate, the number of years of tribuneship, and imperial acclamations.

Among the most valuable coins presented in vol. 4 arc those from the Wroclaw hoard whose parts going back to the reign of Trajan and Hadrian were presented in vol. 3'. It describes 71 coins of the Roman Republic dating from 225 to 31 B. C. in the first part and, in the second, 192 coins of ihe early Roman Empire (from Augustus to Domitian).

Most of the coins presented in this volume come from the former collection of the Jagellonian Library (241 specimens), 19 coins came from the collection of the Cabinet of Archaeology, moreover, 1 coin was donated by the Academy of Sciences and Letters in Cracow and 2 coins came from other donations.

Among the coins of the Roman Republic included in the first part of the catalogue, the oldest are the didrachms called qt/adrigati with a characteristic representation of a quadriga with Jupiter and Victory on the reverse (pos. 1 and 2). There is presently a controversy over the date of this emission. The opinion hitherto accepted up till now has connected the appearance of the first quadrigati with the last emission of libral aes grave ("ship's prow") but the opinions of particular investigators varyl. Recently P. Marchetii suggested that they had appeared exactly at the time when the semilibral reduction was introduced, i.e., in 225 B. C. * It is widely believed, however, that the emission of the quadrigati stopped simultaneously with the introduction of denarii, i.e.. in the years 214 to 211 B. C.3 Moreover, the 3rd century is represented by 14 bronze coins of various nominals and 1 victoriat. The 2nd century B. C. is represented in the catalogue by 20 coins: 3 bronze and 17 denarii, including, among others, 1 denarius subaeratus.
Notae Numismaticae vol.
